Bionomice profiles of selected peridomestic insects and their parasitic associations in Urban-Fringe Zones of Owerri, South East Nigeria

Author(s): Ikpeama CA

Abstract: This study is aimed at studying the bionomics profiles of selected peridomestic insects and their parasitic associations in urban-fringe zones of Owerri from January, 2022 to December, 2022. It assessed the vectoral capacity of cockroaches and houseflies in the transmission of human intestinal parasites. Twenty households from the four study sites were selected using the household Randomization method. Cockroaches and houseflies were caught using bait and insecticide spray. The cockroach types collected include:- Periplaneta americana, Supella longipalpa and Blattella germanicum, while housefly collected were Musa domestica, Musa sorbens, Calliphora vomifora, Chrysomya rufifacies and Chrysomya megacephala. Parasites were extracted from the insects through sedimentation method and identified. Data were analyzed using GraphPad Prism 5 (Graph pad software Inc La Jolla, CA92037, USA). The following parasites were isolated from the cockroaches and houseflies; ova of A lumbricoides, E. vennicularis, hookworm, T. trichiuria, E. histolytice, Taenia spp, Toxocara spp and strongyloides. There is high contamination of human intestinal parasites in cockroaches and houseflies in human dwelling places in the study area, thus they can transmit these parasites to exposed food materials.
