Nutritional benefits and health effects of cucumbers

Author(s): Priyanka Saini

Abstract: Cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) are widely consumed vegetables known for their high water content, refreshing taste, and nutritional value. This paper reviews the nutritional composition and health effects of cucumbers, highlighting their role in hydration, weight management, and digestive health. Cucumbers provide essential micronutrients such as vitamin K, vitamin C, potassium, and magnesium, alongside bioactive phytochemicals including flavonoids, tannins, and cucurbitacins. These compounds contribute antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and potential anti-cancer properties. The integration of these nutrients and phytochemicals positions cucumbers as a functional food that supports cardiovascular health, immune function, and chronic disease prevention. Despite their low calorie and fiber content, cucumbers offer significant benefits when included as part of a balanced diet. This study synthesizes current scientific findings to emphasize the importance of cucumbers in promoting overall wellness and suggests directions for future research.
