Abstract: This study is aimed to evaluate the efficacy of Eryngium foetidum oil against adult Culex pipiens. Ethanol extract of the aerial parts of Eryngium foetidum was screened for its phytochemical constituents and used for larvicidal assay. A stock solution of the extract (5 g in 100 ml of water) was prepared. A stock solution of the oil was prepared using 15% tween-40 solution as the diluent. From the stock solution four different concentrations (31.5, 62.5, 125 and 250 µl/ml) of the extract with four replicates each. Forty (40) adults each of Culex pipiens were separately exposed to each extract concentration for 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 mins. Rate of knockdown and mortality was recorded after each stipulated time intervals. The results revealed that of adults exposed to the extract increased with increased concentration and exposure time. Exposure of Cx. pipiens adults to the extract resulted in overall 14% mortality and 46% knockdown. However, the highest concentration yielded 50% in both cases with 10% knockdown and 40% mortality for the exposure of this oil to Culex pipiens adult at the lowest concentration level (31.25 µL/mL). This study revealed the susceptibility of adults Cx. pipiens to the extract as evident by the 50min LC50 values obtained which was 956.013 µL/mL. Results obtained from this study suggests that the aerial parts of Eryngium foetidum would be effective in the control of Culex pipiens. In addition, with longer exposure time Eryngium foetidum oil is however, a convincingly eco-friendly plant-based species yet, have an effective larvicidal potential against Culex pipiens and promotes plant-based alternatives to synthetic pesticides.
