Efficacy of temperature fluctuation in behaviors and reproduction of Drosophila melanogaster

Abstract: The effect of temperature in behavior and fertility of Drosophila melanogaster have not been evaluated in the condition of Chitwan Nepal. So, an investigation to determine the efficacy of variable temperature in behaviors and reproductive capacity of D. Melanogaster was carried from January 2022 to December 2022 in the laboratory of Department of Entomology, Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU), Rampur, Chitwan, Nepal. The study was conducted with the collection of 15 strains of D. melanogaster through the field. The effect of temperature in locomotion and sleeping behavior including hatching capacity of Drosophila strains were analyzed regularly where the temperature was maintained as that of the external environment throughout the year. Most of the strains of Drosophila were active in locomotion at lower temperature (at or below 25 °C) and vice-versa. Selected strains of Drosophila were more active in night duration with lower temperature in comparison with daytime and higher temperature. At nighttime (i.e., lower temperature) the Drosophila strains found sleeping with less duration compared with daytime (i.e., higher temperature). The effect of temperature was found significant in reproduction of Drosophila female strains, i.e., at higher temperature (at or above 25 °C with minimum of average 35 eggs per day) the average eggs hatched were higher in comparison with lower temperature (at or below 25 °C with maximum of average 75 eggs per day). Thus, temperature has a significant effect in the different behaviors and reproduction capacity of Drosophila strains collected from Chitwan district of Nepal.
